Moving to Hong Kong: Knowing the holiday of the month
2 Jun 2022
If you are new to Asia, you might want to know about the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Tuen Ng Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This year, it falls on the 3rd of June, and it is a public holiday in Hong Kong. This festival is one of the most significant Chinese Festivals on the lunar calendar.
The festival is to commemorate Qu Yuan, who was known for his patriotism during the warring states period of ancient China. It is a traditional custom for the Chinese to eat ‘zongzi,‘ a kind of sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are usually made of glutinous rice with meat or some other fillings. Approaching the festival, you will find different flavors and shapes of ‘zongzi‘ available in the supermarkets. They are all tasty.
Another highlight of this festival is the Dragon Boat Race. The race is a daylong event all kinds of organizations from around the globe, such as police, fireman, etc. It was an international event back then. Due to the COVID, it has been canceled for the past two years. Luckily this year, the Stanley Dragon Boat Championships return. The Stanley Dragon Boat Championships will be held on the 3rd of June in Stanley Main Beach, starting from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you are in Hong Kong, mark your schedule for this event. I hope you can enjoy watching the exciting dragon boat races.
